日本について全体的な印象
- an abundance of vending machines
- a dearth of trash cans
- navigation software is great at getting you from places to subway stations (and vice versa), but falls flat inside subway stations (the signage inside the stations is very good, so just use that)
- it’s amazing how much you can do with your own body and a public transit card when a place is built with people in mind and not just cars
日本語の勉強
Since this trip started to get planned about a year in advance, I decided to try studying some Japanese. After a year, I felt somewhat confident navigating around metro stations, reading menus and signs, and speaking with employees at restaurants and stores. I definitely wished I had practiced output at least a little, but しょうがない ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
My method is far from unique, but I figured I would write down the resources I used anyway.
Anki
Anki is a (free and open-source 😎) spaced repetition program (think fancy flashcards that know when to show you a card again based on how well you tell it you remembered a card). I used two different “core” decks (listed below) that are supposed to have the most commonly used words in a language, and took 10 to 20 new cards a day. My reviews lasted anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on whether or not I decided to listen to the example sentence audio that day.

Grammar
There’s a lot of 「 d i s c o u r s e 」 online about the best way to learn grammar in a new language (textbooks, exercises, immersion, etc.) so I tried to do a bit of everything. Here’s a list of the main grammar resources I used (in no particular order):
