• 「ーちゃう」 is a contraction of the past tense of 「しまう」
  • 「しまう」 means “to finish” or “to complete”
  • 「てしまう」 becomes 「ちゃう」 and 「てしまった」 becomes 「ちゃった」
  • stories sometimes end with 「おしまい」 (the 「お」 being an honorific prefix and 「しまい」 being the い stem noun version of 「しまう」)
• 「しまった。」 can be used as an expression on its own meaning something like “Something’s gone wrong.” or “That’s done it.”
• 「しまった」 can also be used as a helper verb on the て form of another verb
  • 「てしまった」 gets shortened to 「ちゃった」 and 「でしまう」 becomes 「じゃった」
  • this has a wider range of meanings than just 「しまった」 on its own
    • can be used for things done accidentally, or on purpose, or gladly, etc.
    • one way to combine all these meanings is using the word “done” (or “end up” or “wind up”)
      • ex: 「忘れちゃった。」 means “I done forgot.”
      • ex: 「スーパーヒーローになちゃった。」 means “I done became a superhero.”
