- 「連用形」 is the connective 「い」 stem of verbs
- almost all non-verb dedicated helpers connect to the 「い」 stem
- ex: 「読む」 (“to read”) becomes 「読み」
- 「読み易い」 means “easy to read”
- 「読み難い」 means “hard to read”
- 「歩きながら読む」 means “while walking, read”
- connectors can be stacked together
- ex: 「読み込み中」 means “middle of reading and packing in (loading data)”
- 「連用形」 can combine verbs with nouns to make new nouns
- ex: 「泣き虫」 means “cry-bug (crybaby)”
- ex: 「読み方」 means “way of reading (usually refers to pronunciation of a kanji)”
- 「連用形」 can combine two clauses to form a compound sentence
- ex: 「お店に行ってパンを買った。」 and 「お店に行きパンを買った。」 are equivalent
- 「連用形」 transforms verbs into their noun forms (nominalization)
- ex: 「お店にパンを買いに行く。」
- 「お店に」 marks the location
- 「買いに」 marks the purpose
