potential helper verb

• attaches to the え stem and has two forms: 「る」for godan verbs and 「られる」 for ichidan verbs
  • ex: 「買う」 -> 「買え」 -> 「買える」 which means “buyable”
  • ex: 「持つ」 -> 「持て」 -> 「持てる」 which means “holdable”
  • ex: 「食べる」 -> 「食べ」 -> 「食べられる」 which means “eatable”
• 「来る」 and 「する」 are also irregular here
  • 「来る」 becomes 「来られる」
  • 「する」 becomes 「出来る」
• ex: 「本が読める。」 means “The book is readable.”, not “I am able to read the book.”
• the potential helper verb is an ichidan verb and can be conjugated as such
  • 「歩ける」 means “could walk”
  • 「歩けた」 means “could not walk”
  • 「歩けない」 means “cannot walk”
  • 「歩けなかった」 means “could not walk”
