passive sentences

• passive sentences mark something that is being acted upon (not the actor)
• 「人は何かに何かをされる」
  • 「人」 is the person receiving the action
  • the first 「何か」 is the actor
  • the second 「何か」 is the object
  • 「される」 is the action
• for ichidan and godan verbs, add 「れる」 to the 「あ」 stem
• 「する」 becomes 「される」 and 「来る」 becomes 「来られる」

  「てある」

• 「てある」 is for things that were 「ておく」’d by someone else

  「間に」

• 「A間にB」 means “B happens during A”
• 「A間、B」 means “B lasted as long as A”

  adjectives and 「する」

• for 「い」 adjectives, replace the 「い」 with 「く」 and add 「する」
• for adjectival nouns, add 「にする」

  「て欲しい」

• use 「（てFORM)欲しい」 to ask someone to do something
• use 「欲しくない」 to ask someone to not do something
