• 「まい」 is a negative helper (related to 「ない」) that attaches to the end of godan verbs (not a verb stem)
  • it can be attached to the stem of ichidan verbs or to the whole ichidan verb
  • 「する」 becomes 「しまい」, 「来る」 becomes 「こまい」
  • 「まい」 is the volitional form, though it is not used as an “anti-volitional”
• 「まい」 can be used to say that something is unlikely
  • ex: 「そんなことはあるまい。」 means “Such a thing is unlikely (to be).”
• 「あるまい」 is equivalent to 「ないでしょう」
  • ex: 「彼が来るだろう。」 means “He will probably come.”
  • ex: 「彼が来るまい。」 means “He probably will not come.”
• 「まい」 can also be used as a strong assertion of negative intent
  • ex: 「二度と行くまい。」 means “(I) will not go a second time.”
• ex: 「行こうか、行くまいか」 means “Whether (I) go or not”
• 「まい」 + 「し」 means “It’s not like…”
